Description:
Castaño y Nogal Association aims to promote sustainable rural development, rural tourism included, and to preserve the natural and cultural richness of the Becerreá region (Galicia-Northwest of Spain). One way of doing this is through recovering and preserving old walking footpaths and rural architecture that have been neglected for many years. In this way, the local population as well as nature lovers, mountaineers, etc., can fully explore the region, enjoy and appreciate its beauty.
Type of work:
The main aim is to restore a 15-km-long, traditional footpath along the banks of the river Donsal in order to prepare it as a trekking route. It would involve working about 5 hours a day, 5 days per week. A certain amount of physical outdoor work is to be expected.
It includes the following tasks:
Reconstruction of old mini electrical stations and other old architectural elements existing along the footpath (for instance water mills, repairing wooden bridges…).
Identification of local plant species.
Signalization of the footpath according to international standards (for instance painting).
Cleaning the footpath, moving stones, weeding, cutting wood.
Work clothes will be provided upon arrival. Task work is of a low and medium intensity
Aims
1) Environmental tasks to clean and keep the trekking route along the Quinta-Donsal river
2) To develop and mark known this quiet rural area surrounded by a genuine landscape with beautiful woods.
Additional activities:
In order to get to know the living way and the traditional culture of the area, workshops and meetings will be organized together with the local community, some of which are listed below:
Meeting the locals and visiting local houses to get to know the lifestyle in Galician rural area
Taking part in workshops with the locals about handicraft and rural foodstuff in the area, like traditional bread, cheese, honey…
Visiting the most interesting ethnographic places in the area: Navia de Suarnia, Becerreá, and Piornedo villages; Piedrafita do Cebreiro, hamlet placed in Camino de Santiago; Lugo and A Coruña cities
Taking part in the music-poetic concert, on 30th August, in honour to the volunteers and contributors
Lodging:
A house fitted with 3 rooms with bunk beds, 2 bathrooms, kitchen, office, meeting room and a shed. The dorms may be mixed.
Volunteers should cook and clean for themselves on a rota basis.
Language:
English and Spanish. All volunteers should speak and understand at least some Spanish.
Qualifications:
We are looking for motivated, mature and experienced volunteers, who enjoy outdoor working and have an interest in a simple rural lifestyle, nature, traditions and community development.
Place:
Becerreá, Lugo (SPAIN). Medium temperatures (22-32°C) are expected in the area during summer.
